About the building
The Sydney West Trial Courts complex is a major justice facility serving Western Sydney, providing the community with access to higher court services outside the Sydney CBD. The secure, purpose-built court environment accommodates Supreme and District Court Jurisdictions and related court operations, including criminal trials, appeal hearings, judicial chambers, custody movements, legal practitioners suites, Corrective Services, Sheriff’s officers and registry support functions.
The design, by Lyons Architecture, balances functional requirements with an accessible, welcoming environment that serves a growing metropolitan region. It is one of the first court buildings in Australia to provide five independent circulation systems that service judicial, jury, public, custody and administrative staff, separating secure court movements while still presenting as an accessible civic building. Outside, the facade contrasts copper and glass; inside, the views, natural light and warm timber finishes ease the court experience.
The Sydney West Trial Courts complex is part of the Parramatta Justice Precinct, which consolidates major court functions in Western Sydney. Officially opened in 2008, the precinct brings together a mix of historical and contemporary judicial buildings around a landscaped public square designed by EDAW.
